Image oracle

Screenshot of a gray spreadsheet. On the left side is a list of oracle deck options displaying names like 'Deck of Many Things', 'Rider-Waite tarot major arcana' and 'Wildwood tarot minor arcana', each one with a check box next to it. On the right side is an image of the Wheel of Fortune card from the Rider-Waite tarot deck.

Okay, so I once again spent a whole lot of time making a kind of unnecessary spreadsheet toy.

As per usual with these things, I suggest you make your own copy of the spreadsheet so that you can click the checkboxes and make all the random stuff re-randomize. Anyway, as you can tell, it displays randomly selected tarot cards. And also tarokka cards from D&D's Ravenloft setting. And also D&D's deck of many things, which ain't even a fortune-telling deck, but what the hell, why not.

You can select which decks are included by using the checkboxes on the options page, in case you want to go pure normal tarot or you want to leave out the deck of many things with its rather questionable "Idiot" and "Visier" cards. If I wanted to really do this right, I should also have created inverted versions of all of the cards. But, frankly, at 300+ images (many of which are larger than strictly necessary), I may be pushing the limits of the medium. I mean, this ain't what spreadsheets are made for, you know?

But a big part of why I did it this way—I mean, aside from the fact that it's way easier for me than doing it all in Javascript—is that this should be pretty simple for other folks to customize just by adding more stuff to the list sheet. Just make sure that each entry has its own index cell (that's the bit that randomly generates a number which determines whether or not the card is selected) and its own image cell (because, for mysterious Google Sheets reasons, it is necessary to load the images through direct references, or else they'll never load properly through any randomized bits). You can even add new source categories, and they'll automatically populate the list on the options sheet!

So why did I make this? Well, I started off intending to make a tool for random dungeon stocking, and part of my plan was to show a random image as an inspirational aid. And then I just kind of got carried away with the random image thing. I don't actually care about tarot at all, but I think this could be handy for spark table stuff.

Maybe I'll come back to this later and finally make the dungeon stocker. Or possibly just add more cards to the oracle.
